Queen Alexandra’s of GB Fabergé brooch
The brooch is centered by an oval cabochon mecca stone, which is framed by rose-cut diamonds with a diamond set bow to the pinnacle. The name ‘Mecca-stone” was assigned by the staff of Fabergé, to refer to a mauve or purple-blue chalcedony agate. The name is likely to have derived from Mocha, a town on the Red Sea from which these stones have been exported since antiquity. Fabergé developed a sophisticated means of setting these stones above a coloured foil, which enabled them to seemingly change colour in different lights (in this case from a delicate pink to a light blue).
